Acne

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. Acne is most common among teenagers, though it affects people of all ages.

Effective acne treatments are available, but acne can be persistent. The pimples and bumps heal slowly, and when one begins to go away, others seem to crop up.

Depending on its severity, acne can cause emotional distress and scar the skin. The earlier you start treatment, the lower your risk of such problems.

Causes:

  • Clogged pores:

Dead skin cells, oil (sebum), and bacteria can block pores, leading to blackheads, whiteheads, and other types of pimples.

  • Other factors:

Certain medications, oily cosmetics, and even friction or pressure on the skin can contribute to acne.

  • Hormonal fluctuations:

Androgens, like testosterone, increase during puberty, leading to larger and more active oil glands in the skin.

  • Inflammation:

Propionibacterium acnes, a type of bacteria, thrives in clogged pores and can trigger inflammation.

Types of Acne:

  • Blackheads: Open comedones, appearing as small, dark bumps.

  • Whiteheads: Closed comedones, appearing as small, white or flesh-colored bumps.

  • Papules: Small, red, raised bumps that may be tender.

  • Pustules: Papules with pus at the tip.

  • Nodules: Large, painful, solid lumps beneath the skin.

  • Cysts: Large, pus-filled lumps that can cause scarring.

Treatment:

  • Over-the-counter products:

Cleansers, topical creams (containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or retinoids), and other treatments can help manage mild to moderate acne.

  • Prescription medications:

For more severe cases, doctors may prescribe antibiotics, hormonal therapies, or stronger topical treatments.

Self-care:

  • Gentle cleansing: Wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser and warm water.

  • Avoid touching or picking: This can worsen inflammation and lead to scarring.

  • Protect from the sun: Sun exposure can exacerbate discoloration left by acne.

  • Manage stress: Stress can worsen acne, so find healthy ways to cope with stress.
